Micra Live Plant Lighting Guide: Ideal Intensity and Duration

July 03, 2025

Micra live plants are popular among aquarists for their compact size and lush green appearance. But like all aquatic plants, they require proper lighting to thrive. Too little light leads to stunted growth, while too much can promote algae or even damage the plant. This guide will help you strike the right balance.

Understanding Micra Plant Lighting Needs

Micra (also called Micranthemum) thrives best in moderate lighting conditions. Aim for 2 to 3 watts per gallon if using fluorescent bulbs, or 20–40 PAR for LED lighting. Full-spectrum lights with a color temperature between 5000K–7000K are ideal.

How Much Light Is Too Much?

Excessive lighting (above 50 PAR or 10+ hours daily) may seem beneficial but often results in algae blooms and CO₂ imbalance. Without sufficient nutrients and CO₂, high light encourages unwanted growth rather than helping Micra.

Recommended Light Duration

For healthy Micra growth, maintain a consistent light schedule of 6 to 8 hours per day. Using a timer helps regulate the cycle and avoids overexposure.

Signs of Too Much Light

  • Excessive algae on leaves and substrate

  • Yellowing or browning leaf tips

  • Melting or decaying plant tissue

Best Practices for Lighting Micra

  • Use high-quality full-spectrum LED or fluorescent lights

  • Supplement with CO₂ if using intense lighting setups

  • Pair with nutrient-rich substrates or fertilizers

  • Clean your tank regularly to reduce algae buildup

Conclusion

Finding the right lighting balance for your Micra live plant is essential for maintaining a vibrant and healthy aquascape. Moderate light, consistent duration, and proper nutrient management will ensure optimal results without overwhelming your setup.
